Pregnancy Massage

If you've never had a pregnancy massage before, it's normal to feel a bit unsure about what actually happens. Do you lie on your stomach? Is it super gentle? Is it even worth it? Let's walk through it so you know exactly what you're walking into.

How we begin

Firstly, it will start with a chat. Your therapist should ask how far along you are, how the pregnancy is going, any concerns along the way, what's been going on in your body, any aches or pains, and what you actually want out of the session. This isn't just ticking boxes. It's how the whole treatment gets tailored to you, because pregnancy is not a one-size-fits-all situation.

The treatment table

When it comes to getting on the treatment table, it's all about what is most comfortable for you and baby. We do have a pregnancy pillow that allows you to lay on your stomach, which is 100% safe. However, if you do not feel comfortable doing this or you're later in your pregnancy where your bump is bigger, we will be able to treat you in a side-lying position. In the end the goal is the same, for you to feel supported, relaxed, and not like you're fighting the position the whole time.

The massage

Now the actual massage. This is where people often expect it to be super light and a bit... meh. But it doesn't have to be. You can still get proper, effective treatment, it's just done in a way that's appropriate for your body and stage of pregnancy. That's why our little chat at the start is important, because we are able to focus on those problem areas that need a little more love. Areas like your lower back, hips, glutes and shoulders usually get a lot of attention (because let's be honest, they're doing a lot of the heavy lifting right now). There's often some work on the legs too, to help with circulation and that heavy, achy feeling.

Your therapist will be checking in with you a bit more than usual. That's not them being unsure, that's them making sure everything feels right as your body responds. Pregnancy can change how things feel day to day, so that communication matters. Also, let your therapist know any time during treatment if you're getting uncomfortable, feeling sick or dizzy during your session, so we are able to help you where necessary.

You might also get a few tips along the way. Nothing overwhelming, just little things you can do at home to keep things moving and feeling better between sessions. Feel free to ask questions about anything during the treatment.

The things that matter

At the end, you shouldn't be left wondering what just happened. Our therapists will explain what they found, what they worked on, and what the plan is going forward. That might be when to come back or how to manage if something flares up again.

And just to clear this up, pregnancy massage isn't just a 'nice to have'. Yes it can help you relax (which is great), but it's also really useful for managing pain, moving better, and generally making your body feel a bit more like your own again while everything is changing.

If you're unsure about anything pre, post or during treatment just ask.

You should feel comfortable the whole way through, not guessing what's going on. That's usually a pretty good sign you're in the right hands.
